Choose the correct Lawnmower for your Lawn

Choosing the right type of lawnmower for your garden can be a difficult decision, but our guide will help you find the right mower to keep your grass looking great.

The key factors you need to consider are the quality of the cut you wish to achieve, your lawn size and accessibility.

Rotary Lawnmowers

Rotary lawnmowers work by spinning a blade to cut the grass. They are generally heavier, but provide more power and are a good choice for larger lawns as well as long and overgrown grass.

If you want to get the job done quickly, with minimal fuss a self propelled 4-wheeled rotary lawn mower will be your best bet. With good manoeuvrability, 4-wheeled mowers produce a neat and tidy finish to your lawn.

They are the most common type of garden mower meaning there is a large variety of models to choose from. Rotary mowers can come with a rear roller, which leaves the stripe effect you may have seen on football pitches.

Electric Lawnmowers

Electric lawnmowers are lighter than petrol mowers and cheaper to run. They’re not as powerful, making them suitable for small to medium sized lawns.

Most models plug into your mains, so you will need either an extension lead or an outside power source to power the machine. Some have an inbuilt battery, so no need for cables but you will need to ensure they carry enough charge to finish the job.

Petrol Lawnmowers

Petrol lawnmowers provide you with more power and are therefore more suitable for larger gardens or lawns with longer grass. More power is important as it allows for a good cut and general easier grass mowing although it tends to mean petrol mowers are more expensive.

How to Look After Your Lawn When Winter Arrives

It feels as if we have barely had a summer this year so when it comes to thinking about winter lawn care it seems as if we are always preparing for the cold months rather than the warm ones!

Grass barely grows throughout the winter months so you don’t need to be constantly mowing your lawn, the best approach is to let your lawn rest as much as possible during winter so you can have a lush lawn come spring/summer time. It is advised to keep off wet or frosty grass otherwise you will damage your lawn, the grass will not be able to repair it’s self until the spring if it is impaired throughout the winter.

Mowing

As discussed previously, it is not necessary to continuously mow your lawn as the growth rate will rapidly slow. Depending on the weather conditions and temperatures your grass will either continue to grow or not, if it looks like it needs a trim then mow if necessary. However, never mow your grass if heavy frosts are predicted to follow shortly or if the ground is very wet.

Make sure that your mower is kept in good condition whilst you are not using it as you will need it when spring arrives. Always make sure that the blades are in good condition as this is the major service requirement for a mower.

Leaves and Debris

Over time your lawn will become untidy due to leaves and debris, the use of a light rake or brush will rid your lawn of all free leaves and debris. Try not to use too much force or heavy machinery on your lawn as this will create damage.

Aeration

Consolidated areas of your lawn will need aerating, this can be done by a fork or a spiking machine. Aeration is the process of creating little holes in your soil to relieve compaction, improve drainage and allow more air into the roots which will result in a healthier lawn.

Worms

Don’t be put off by having worms wiggling around your garden, worms actually improve the nutrient content of soil and are beneficial to the soil structure. Worm casts can be brushed or swept away with a stiff brush when dry.

Even though it seems you don’t have to do much to keep your lawn in good condition throughout winter, it is essential that you keep doing these things to look after it so you can have a healthy lawn in spring. Mowing in Wet Weather

Mowing the grass in the rain can be miserable and without the correct equipment, you will not be doing the grass any favours either. Some commercial mowers such as the Mountfield S461 and the Hayter Motif 53 can handle the task; most residential lawn mowers aren't up to it. At best, you may end up with a badly cut lawn. At worst, you can end up with ruts and dead patches that are a pain to repair.

There are numerous of reasons why rain gives grass the upper hand when you try to mow, Grass behaves like people when it's getting rained on: it hunches over. The result is that many blades of grass get pushed over, not cut, when you try to mow. At least until the sun comes up, when all of the uncut grass should once again stand at attention. Some of the wet grass may stick to the mower blades, making it cut less efficiently.

Wet grass can stick to the mower's undercarriage, eventually getting thick enough to impede the mower blades and slow their rotation, further diminishing the mower's cutting ability.

Most mowers have mulching blades that create suction. Cut grass gets sucked up and cut into tiny pieces when it's dry. But when it's wet, the grass clumps up and doesn't get mulched.

If your grass has been saturated past its root depth, and if your mower wheels or shoes slide laterally, they can literally push the grass, roots and all, out of place, leaving ruts.

If you do decide to mow in the rain, make sure you are using a top of the range mower that is up the task.

Quality Hayter Mowers and Garden Tractors

The name Hayter has been synonymous with grass cutting in the UK for over 50 years, they pioneered the rotary mower and, to this day, continue to offer the very best in lawn mowers and tractors. Mulching Lawnmowers - The Easy Way to Mulch Your Lawn

In agriculture and gardening, mulch is a protective cover placed over the soil, to retain moisture, reduce erosion, suppress weed growth and seed germination, and provide nutrients as they decay. The purpose of mulching in gardens and landscapes is to mimic leaf cover on forest floors.

There are many different types of materials that can be used as mulches and it can vary considerably. What mulches to use can depend on cost, appearance, availblity and the effect it has on the soil. A few common types of mulch includes
  • Organic residue (Including grass clippings, leaves, straw, bark, sawdust and wood chippings)
  • Compost (Needs to have any weed seed removed so as not to encourage the growth of weeds)
  • Rubber Mulch (Made from recycled tyre rubber)
  • Plastic Mulch (Predominant in large scale vegetable growing, crops crowing through slits or holes in plastic sheeting)
  • Rock and gravel (more common in cooler climates where the rocks retain heat to help growth)
In a typical garden you are more likely to use compost and even more so grass cuttings to mulch your lawn and the easiest way to do this is with a mulching lawnmower.

Mulching lawnmowers recycle grass clippings by finely cutting and re-cutting the grass concealing cuttings within the standing grass to wilt and decompose thereby feeding the soil.

Recycling or mulching the grass in this way also saves time as there’s no more stopping to empty the grass collector - no more bagging up clippings and taking them to the tip, or having unsightly piles of rotting grass around your garden either.

For a great range of mulching lawnmowers for top brands including Honda, Lawnflite, Massey Ferguson, Hayter and Mountfield visit World of Mowers.
