Choose the correct Lawnmower for your Lawn

Choosing the right type of lawnmower for your garden can be a difficult decision, but our guide will help you find the right mower to keep your grass looking great.

The key factors you need to consider are the quality of the cut you wish to achieve, your lawn size and accessibility.

Rotary Lawnmowers

Rotary lawnmowers work by spinning a blade to cut the grass. They are generally heavier, but provide more power and are a good choice for larger lawns as well as long and overgrown grass.

If you want to get the job done quickly, with minimal fuss a self propelled 4-wheeled rotary lawn mower will be your best bet. With good manoeuvrability, 4-wheeled mowers produce a neat and tidy finish to your lawn.

They are the most common type of garden mower meaning there is a large variety of models to choose from. Rotary mowers can come with a rear roller, which leaves the stripe effect you may have seen on football pitches.

Electric Lawnmowers

Electric lawnmowers are lighter than petrol mowers and cheaper to run. They’re not as powerful, making them suitable for small to medium sized lawns.

Most models plug into your mains, so you will need either an extension lead or an outside power source to power the machine. Some have an inbuilt battery, so no need for cables but you will need to ensure they carry enough charge to finish the job.

Petrol Lawnmowers

Petrol lawnmowers provide you with more power and are therefore more suitable for larger gardens or lawns with longer grass. More power is important as it allows for a good cut and general easier grass mowing although it tends to mean petrol mowers are more expensive.

Get Ready for Cutting season with a new Lawn mower

While winter is not yet over and spring seems a fair way off, it is worth thinking about your lawn. Take a look in your shed and make sure your lawn mower is ready for the spring. There’s nothing worse than waiting till the lawn really needs a cut to discover you need a new lawnmower. Maybe your lawn mower still works but you want something more suitable for your lawn. At World of Mowers we have a range of lawn mowers suitable for different lawn sizes and types.

Electric Lawn mowers
Electric lawn mowers are no longer the poor man’s petrol mower. The efficient designs mean you can have the power of a petrol mower with the ease of use of an electric. Certain brands of mowers like Wolf Mowers have anti kink cable minders to keep the cable out of your way. The needs for a power source make these mowers more suitable for smaller to medium size gardens, they should also not be used in wet weather.

Cordless Lawn Mowers
The lightweight nature of the electric and the freedom of movement combined makes Cordless Lawn Mowers a good option for people who need this combination. Battery powered mowers don’t need to be plugged in to run, so can reach areas you would have only thought possible with a petrol lawnmower without the maintenance of a petrol mower.

Cordless Mower

Petrol Rotary Mowers.
Petrol rotary mowers have 4 wheels and an engine above the horizontal rotor blade; most models have a collection bag and the ability to alter the cut length. World of mowers have a range of Mountfield lawn mowers and Lawnflite lawnmowers. Small petrol lawn mower can be easy to handle, there are no wires to worry about and they can cope well with damp grass. Petrol mowers can cope with larger gardens and are great for lawns between 40m2 and 1600m2. Petrol mowers are worth considering if you have a safe place to store petrol and can maintain the engine. Petrol mowers usually have the option of self-propelled or push. Self-propelled is worth considering for larger lawns and an easier job as they tend to be adjustable to your walking speed.

Petrol Rear Roller Mowers. These are similar in design to the petrol rotary mowers except for a large rear roller; the roller is used to create neat stripes in your lawn.

Petrol Rear Roller Mower

Petrol Cylinder Mowers. For a truly professional lawn finish, cylinder mowers are unbeaten by other models of mowers. Use this mower to maintain a sport turf finish or just keep it looking professional. Cylinder mowers have vertically rotating blades and deliver a fine cut; this makes them unsuitable for uneven lawns

Mulching Lawn mowers Using a Mulching Mower is the easiest way to cut your grass and the innovative blade and deck design also makes the lawnmower quieter. The system cuts and recuts the grass into tiny pieces that are distributed while you mow, these simply wilt away, returning valuable nutrients to the soil to improve lawn quality.

Whatever lawn mower you require there is a large range to choose from and great advice available in store and online at World of Mowers.

How To Look After Your Lawn Mower

Every time your cut your grass there will be regular things to check for as well as annual things which MUST be done to make sure your lawn mower is in top condition.

Most lawn mowers come with a manual which will guide you on how you should look after your mower correctly, we advise you familiarise yourself with your manual so you know what precautions you should take when undertaking any cleaning or maintenance.

Regular Maintenance

After mowing your lawn you will need to clean the underside, blade, chute and the wheels/rollers of your lawn mower this will stop an excess build of grass and dirt getting trapped. You can clean these compartments using either a hose or a stiff hand brush, just keep in mind to stay clear of the engine if you use a hose! If you do use water to clean the blades make sure you wipe any excess water off to avoid the risk of rusting.

You will need to thoroughly check all the nuts and bolts of your machine to make sure they are securely attached, you don’t want anything coming loose.

After every use check the blades for sharpness and dents, if your blade has more than a few dents then you should replace it in order to get the best performance out of your mower.

Annual  Maintenance

If you own an electric mower then a low level of maintenance is required, just make sure that your mower is thoroughly clean and that all the moving parts are well oiled.

However, if you own a petrol mower you will need to do several things: clean the filter, change the spark plug and replace the engine oil. You will also need to check any cables, chains and the wheels for any damage.

Finally, let’s discuss blades. If you own a rotary mower then you can sharpen the blade at home, sharpening a blade can be a tricky job and there are tool kits available to help you with the process. If you own a cylinder mower then sharpening the blade is a lot more difficult as you need to align the removable blade with the stationary one. We suggest you visit your local lawn mower specialist to assist you in sharpening or replacing your blade for a cylinder mower.

How To Have The Perfect Summer Garden

As we welcome spring it’s time to think about prepping your garden for summer so you can obtain the perfect summer garden.

Referring back to our monthly lawn care planner, April is the month where you should be aiming to mow your lawn at regular intervals. We suggest investing in a Hayter lawn mower; famed for making the finest mowers. You can see our review on this brand here.

With regards to obtaining the perfect summer garden, your aim for this month is to keep your grass at a healthy height without it becoming unmanageable.

Maintenance is key for this time of month as making sure to keep those pesky weeds from growing will seem like a full time job! The healthier your garden is the more difficult it is for weeds to grow. The best way to tackle any weed is to kill it as soon as you see it, rather than leaving it to grow for a bit first. To kill a weed either do it by hand by ripping them up from the roots or select a suitable and strong weed killer.

This is the perfect time of year to tidy up your garden. Any damage which has happened to your lawn over the winter months, the time is now to repair the damage just in time for June. To fix any damaged areas we recommend re-seeding any dry or dead patches and making sure you keep an eye on your freshly seeded patches.

It’s essential to make sure you give your grass a good nourishing feed in order for it to grow and stay healthy. At this particular time of year you many want to give your lawn a feed which has a high concentration of nitrogen, as this is what your lawn will benefit the most from.

By following these simple to do suggestions you can obtain a nice and healthy lawn by summer time, ideal for summer barbecues and outdoor celebrations.

Monthly Lawn Care Planner

When a new year starts the last thing you’re probably thinking about is lawn care. However, here at World of Mowers we have come up with a simple guide of what you need to do each month to look after your garden. Follow this guide from January to December and you will have a lush garden year after year.

January

January is the month where you can put your feet up because all you have to do is brush away any debris and keep off the grass, especially if it’s frozen.

February

Spring is slowly creeping back, so this month you will need to rake your grass thoroughly. Mid-way through the month it is recommended that you aerate your lawn to relieve compaction, improve drainage and allow more air into the roots.

March

The hard work kicks in this month as the growth rate for your grass should start to accelerate. You should be prepared to mow your lawn for this first time this year using a high quality mower. Make sure you only cut the top of your grass at this stage as close cutting your lawn will result in patches of your grass wilting/dying.

April

Mow your lawn at regular intervals when needed, your aiming to keep your grass at a healthy height without it becoming unmanageable. It is also the perfect time to repair any damage your lawn may have suffered over winter, you can do this by re-seeding any bare patches.

May

You will need to keep mowing your lawn at regular intervals. If you start to notice the growth of weeds then make sure you apply a suitable weed killer.

June

If you have a healthy lawn then you will need to mow it twice weekly. It is recommended that you regularly rake the grass to stimulate growth and eradicate any moss or debris. If temperatures are quite high and are frequently rising then you will need to water your lawn.

July

The same process applies to July. This month you need to make sure you regularly rake, mow twice a week, and water your lawn. It is also recommended to give your lawn a nourishing feed to make sure your lawn stays healthy.

August

This month you will need to repeat the lawn care instructions from June and July. However, if you start to notice dry patches make sure to avoid mowing over these patches as they will require a longer growth period.

September

As the autumn season approaches, you will need to slowly decrease the amount of times you mow your lawn. You will also need to be aware of how closely you cut your grass, at this time of the year you will only need to trim the ends of the grass in order to keep a reasonable length.

October

This month you will need to spike your lawn as well as keep any falling debris off. It is also recommended that you supply your lawn with an autumn feed to provide your lawn with essential nutrients.

November

Sweep over your lawn to remove any worm casts, you will need to use a stiff brush to do this.

December

It that time of year when you can put your feet up again, just make sure you keep fallen debris of your lawn.

Hopefully this quick and easy to follow guide will help you when it comes to maintaining your lawn. For more gardening tips, lawn mowers, and lawn mower spares visit World of Mowers in store or online today.

Do You Borrow Gardening Equipment?

A recent survey last month showed that gardening equipment is at the top of the list for the most borrowed things between neighbours. This means instead of owning your own lawn mower or chainsaw it has become more common to borrow from your friends and your family.

So how come this is happening? Most people are under the misconception that gardening equipment is too expensive and shockingly they don’t see it as a long term investment.

With more housing properties including gardens now, gardening equipment has branched out becoming more accessible and cheaper for the average consumer.

At World of Mowers we have a large and affordable range of gardening equipment for everybody from chainsaws to shovels. If you are guilty of borrowing your neighbours rake then snap out of the habit and view our collection of Wolf multi-star rakes starting from only £7.99. Every rake in this range is specially designed to be sturdy yet light so you can find cleaning your lawn easy. All the Wolf multi-change rakes have a 30% discount and free quick delivery.
If you believe that hedge cutters are just too expensive to own then why not view our stock of hedge cutters and trimmers. The Bosch AHS 41 Accu cordless hedge cutter for only £59.99 can cut a phenomenal 25 metres of hedge and can run 55 minutes at a time thanks to the battery supplied.  The 410mm long blade will provide a clean cut so you can regularly maintain your hedges the easy way.
Mowers are one of the most common gardening tools that people borrow, for as little as £64.99 you could own one yourself. The Bosch Rotak 32 electric rotary mower is renowned for being resilient and powerful when it comes to providing you with a beautifully cut lawn. This mower is as powerful as a petrol powered one and is also lightweight.

We offer free quick delivery to all UK mainland orders so you don’t need to fret about the extra expense of delivery, and you won’t have long to wait for your new tools. For more information visit our website or get in touch with us on 0115 920 0099.

How to look after your lawn in Autumn

After a dismal summer where we endured grey skies and dodging rain drops it’s fair enough to say that our lawns have suffered with us too over the period. In order to keep your lawn in top shape it will really need a bit of tender love and care at this time of year.

In autumn it is essential to keep looking after your lawn as it is still growing season. Spending time now to look after your lawn will make sure that it doesn’t suffer at the hands of a harsh winter to come.

So what do you have to do in order to achieve the goal of a healthy looking lawn throughout the autumn period? Well it will only take a few simple steps, the right equipment and the will power to look after your lawn will suffice.

Mowing

Autumn is the time of year when the growth rate of grass will start to slow down. This is due to the drop in temperatures and the days becoming shorter, this will result in the need to mow your grass becoming less frequent.

Feeding

In order to keep your lawn in top condition you will need to make sure you supply your lawn with an autumn feed. This is because over the period you will need to provide your lawn with essential nutrients so it doesn’t become infested with disease and will remain strong throughout winter.

Scarifying

Scarifying your lawns means that you will need a spring-tine rake to rake your lawn. This important process needs to be done thoroughly to eliminate dead grass, moss, and other debris. Doing this process will allow your grass to get better access to water and food which in turn will create a healthier lawn.

Aeration

Aeration is the process of taking a fork or a spiking machine and piercing the lawn in multiple places in order to improve drainage, heal the effects of constant use and improve the air flow within the soil. Doing this will put you on the path to a perfect lawn.

Topdressing

Topdressing is a procedure to fix any uneven or malnourished patches within your lawn. Simply dress the top of your lawn with your mixture (you can buy a premade topdressing from a good garden centre). To make sure that the mixture is perfectly spread over your lawn invest in a garden broom, this will ensure that the mixture covers the holes you have made previously.

The process of looking after your lawn can provide good exercise and quality fresh air, but most importantly it will provide you with a lawn that you can be proud of. For more information on gardening tips and products check out our website World of Mowers.

Summer Lawn Care

In the UK it’s often a rarity that we get the chance to enjoy the summer sunshine, but when we do, we like to enjoy the most of it in our garden with friends and family. It’s fair to say that relaxing on a great looking green lawn makes the summer experience even more pleasurable. But for a lawn this can be the most stressful time of the year. So what can we do to help our lawn look its best?

Watering
Summer is the time when drought can occur and a lawn can turn brown and straw coloured. The most important thing we can do is give it a much deserved drink. Your lawn typically needs between 1 and 1.5 inches of water per week. If it’s really hot and your lawn starts to yellow you may need to increase this. Try to water your lawn once a week rather than spreading your watering out. The general rule here is early morning or in the evening, which probably suits most homeowners. Remember to follow any local regulations when using water in summer (especially with current hosepipe bans).

Mowing
As temperatures hot up and we move into summer the growth of your lawn may actually start to slow down, mow as and when necessary never taking more than one third of the length of the plant off in any one cut. Don’t mow the lawn too short when it is very hot as this can cause damage to occur. Use an edging iron to keep lawn edges neat and tidy. If the conditions are ideal for growth you may need to cut twice a week to keep it looking good. Check out our range of mowers here.

Feeding and Conditioning
For maximum summer lawn care, apply a summer feed to help it grow well. There are several chemical feeds available which are designed for the summer months and will help keep your lawn green and crisp during hot weather.

Planning a Summer Lawn
Looking after and maintaining a beautiful lawn is a rewarding experience and past time. The results speak for themselves and are there for all to see. A grass surface is also one of the safest surfaces for you and your family to enjoy.

It doesn’t take a lot of effort to keep your lawn looking good throughout the summer season and with the right tools and treatments at your fingertips you simply can’t go wrong.
