Using A Grass Scarifier

Scarifying your lawn is important for most gardens. A build of dead material accumulates around the base of grass shoots which needs removing. The material that builds up is termed thatch, which stops air, water and fertiliser from reaching your grass roots. A scarifier is a great way to keep down this debris and will improve the condition of your lawn, by letting air and water through, this will also help to prevent disease which will damage your lawn.

Most gardeners are aware that decomposing material can be good for your garden, however, the thatch build up can not decompose quick enough, which causes a problem and this is where scarification is necessary. A good time to start scarifying your lawn is going into Spring. It is possible to use a spring-tined rake if the garden is small, however, if you have a larger garden a motor driven scarifier would be best. Many garden scarifiers have a collection box to collect the thatch, which makes the job easier. An important tip to remember is, if your grass contains moss to treat the moss before using a scarifier (the scarifier will simply spread the moss about) and then return at a later date to scarify.

If you are considering purchasing a garden scarifier then check out our range of garden tools at World Of Mowers.

Homemade Compost

Making homemade compost is a great idea. It is environmentally friendly, saves you money and improves the quality of your soil. All you need is a container which is suitable to be used to hold the compost and you can begin. Suitable containers can be purchased from garden suppliers or alternatively, you can make your own. To make your own compost container, you can drill holes in a rubbish bin, which will allow oxygen to help with the decomposition process.

To start the compost, you can layer dry leaves, shredded paper, straw, twigs or dead plants, with a layer of weeds, grass and kitchen scraps on top. The first layer will produce a carbon layer, the secondary layer will add nitrogen. However, it is advisable to leave out any meats, fats or anything that has been cooked, due to the risk of attracting vermin.

It is best to combine this layering affect, to try to combine the right ratio of nitrogen to carbon. Too much nitrogen will result in a foul smelling compost heap and too much carbon will slow down the composting process.

The compost should also be watered, however, it is unnecessary to saturate the mixture. The compost can then be turned using a fork or shovel. You can move the outer layers in to the centre and vice versa to keep the mixture aerated.

When the mixture has turned brown and crumbly, the compost should be ready to use.

Utility Vehicles from World of Mowers

With the recent heavy snow fall and icy conditions, we have seen how the average vehicle struggles to manage in such conditions. However, these are the sorts of conditions that a utility vehicle thrives in. With the chunky tyres and high ground clearance, the utility vehicle was designed to go where the standard vehicle can`t.

The utility vehicle or UTV is a cross between a pick up truck and an all terrain vehicle. Initially the UTV was designed to be used for work purposes, however, it soon began to take on a more fun role and was used as a sports vehicle. The UTV may also be known as a side-by-side vehicle( SxS), recreational utility vehicle (RUV) or multi use vehicle (MUV).

If you are looking for a UTV for work or recreational purposes, World Of Mowers (WOM) stocks a range of Polaris, Cub Cadet and Kubota utility vehicles, each with their own unique style and benefits.

For those who want a more environmentally friendly UTV, we also stock the Polaris Ranger EV 4x4 Electric vehicle. The electric powered side-by-side vehicle has a 48 volt high efficiency, AC induction motor, low noise gears, a payload capacity of 453.6kg and a towing capacity of 567kg. We feel that this electric ATV is the market leader, with a top speed of 25mph and a 50 mile range, making it the perfect mid-sized electric side by side vehicle for farming, ranching, hunting and recreational purposes.

WOM also stocks a range of utility vehicle accessories ranging from sport roofs to a heater kit, so if you are in the market for a UTV, then why not visit our website?

The Leave Are Falling

Where does the time go? It`s Christmas time again and along with the winter months comes the falling of the leaves. I am sure that most of us would rather be inside in the warmth, as opposed to sweeping leaves in the cold and that is why the garden blower/garden vacuum was invented.

Whether you are trying to keep your own garden tidy or perhaps you are a professional gardener, the blower will make your life a lot easier and will certainly speed things up for you.

There are numerous reasons why you should pick up fallen leaves in the winter. When leaves fall on to your garden, they prevent sunlight and air getting in to your lawn. By removing the leaves you will have a healthier lawn. The leaves may even find themselves in drainage pipes causing you blockage problems, which could ultimately become quite costly. Furthermore, moist leaves on a footpath can become incredibly slippery, which could pose a health and safety issue, especially for the young or elderly.

If you are considering purchasing this type of equipment, World Of Mowers sells two different types of garden blower/vacuum. The first being the hand held petrol models and the second type is the walk behind version. Our hand held garden blowers can be either the type that blows leaves or the version that will blow and vacuum the leaves into a collection bag, which makes tidying the garden a real breeze. Our walk behind models are designed for those who like the finer things in life and can be used for larger areas and they certainly take all the hard work out of looking after your garden.

If you have any questions regarding which type of garden blower/vacuum would be most suitable for you, then please do not hesitate to contact us at World Of Mowers.

Care Of The Winter Lawn

As we are moving rapidly into the winter season, some of you may be wondering what you should do with your lawn, if anything at all, to have it looking good for the summer months.
Well with the colder spells it is fair to say that there will be less growth in the garden, however, there are still jobs that can be done.

-Go into winter with short grass. Try starting at the end of the fall and the very beginning of winter. Try cutting the grass gradually shorter to curb extra growth at the beginning of the season. The growth will use up nutrients which will dry out the root of the grass, which ultimately may mean dead grass come the spring.

-It is worth checking your lawn for Snow Mould or Fusarium Nivale which occurs at temperatures between 0 degrees C and 8 degrees C.
Fusarium disease starts as a small yellowing patch which turn brown as the patches enlarge. Sometimes - in damp weather - a white or pinkish mould can be seen in the patches. It normally subsides a little as the air temperature warms up and lawns dry out a little. To try to avoid snow mould you should try to avoid high nitrogen fertilisers as too much growth in the winter months and snow are a bad combination. A heavy Potash fertiliser applied in Autumn or a liquid tomato feed.
If you are finding Snow Mould then using Carbendazim, which is a lawn fungicide to treat the mould is a good idea.

-Try spiking a lawn regularly throughout the year to help with drainage.

-It is worth weeding your grass in the winter. As the grass is not growing rapidly in the winter, weeds can take advantage of this and start to kill the grass. Try using a herbicide to kill the weeds before they grow or wait until thyey grow and then use a weed killer.

-Try to maintain the upkeep the garden by moving any fallen leaves, debris and seasonal yard decorations from the yard. If snow falls on these items, it creates an air-tight blanket that smothers your garden and does major damage to the blades of grass and the lawn.

-Try to stay off of the lawn when it snows.

-Very importantly, try to look after your gardening equipment. A lawnmower can be disassembled and then oiled before re-assembly. If you do use an electric mower then make sure that it is cleaned and kept in a place where damp or wet conditions will not create rust.

-Other garden tools such as rakes, spades, hoes etc should also be cleaned and again kept in a place where damp or wet conditions can not seek to cause rust and hence when it is time to re-use the equipment they are in a good condition and are ready to be used.

These are just some basic tips that you can follow to try to get your lawn looking it’s best for next season.
