Winter is coming - Are you prepared?

Although we are adamant to admit it, Autumn is here. Mowing is now needed less frequently and your gardening tasks should be focused on fertilising, moss control and of course, those forever falling leaves.

We have a great range of versatile products to help you jump in to your autumn lawn care routine and be prepared right up until spring.

Not keeping up with leaf removal will result in them rotting and causing damage to your lawn.

At World Of Mowers, we carry a wide range of petrol leaf blowers, available in various sizes and models. This useful piece of equipment will make clearing leaves an easy and effortless task, meaning you will have no excuse to let autumn debris build up.

Moss control

You may have noticed patches of Moss showing under trees and bushes. If left untreated, this can hinder drainage of the lawn and encourage weeds. However it's not too late to tackle the problem. Spring into action this season.

Spring is one of the most important seasons to pay attention to your lawn care routine. The ground is likely to look a little worn down after the cold months, meaning now is the time to rejuvenate and bring it back to good health.

In the springtime your lawn requires regular mowing, feeding and moss killing. The key to greener and thicker grass is to feed it with a good lawn fertilizer, this makes it stronger and restores the health lost in the winter. By carrying it out this task, you are also preventing problems that could occur later into the season.

At World of Mowers we have a great range of Sprayers and Spreaders, to make the job of fertilizing easy and worthwhile. However you choose to fertilize we have products that can accompany you on the job while providing the best quality and efficiency.

Monthly Lawn Care Planner

When a new year starts the last thing you’re probably thinking about is lawn care. However, here at World of Mowers we have come up with a simple guide of what you need to do each month to look after your garden. Follow this guide from January to December and you will have a lush garden year after year.

January

January is the month where you can put your feet up because all you have to do is brush away any debris and keep off the grass, especially if it’s frozen.

February

Spring is slowly creeping back, so this month you will need to rake your grass thoroughly. Mid-way through the month it is recommended that you aerate your lawn to relieve compaction, improve drainage and allow more air into the roots.

March

The hard work kicks in this month as the growth rate for your grass should start to accelerate. You should be prepared to mow your lawn for this first time this year using a high quality mower. Make sure you only cut the top of your grass at this stage as close cutting your lawn will result in patches of your grass wilting/dying.

April

Mow your lawn at regular intervals when needed, your aiming to keep your grass at a healthy height without it becoming unmanageable. It is also the perfect time to repair any damage your lawn may have suffered over winter, you can do this by re-seeding any bare patches.

May

You will need to keep mowing your lawn at regular intervals. If you start to notice the growth of weeds then make sure you apply a suitable weed killer.

June

If you have a healthy lawn then you will need to mow it twice weekly. It is recommended that you regularly rake the grass to stimulate growth and eradicate any moss or debris. If temperatures are quite high and are frequently rising then you will need to water your lawn.

July

The same process applies to July. This month you need to make sure you regularly rake, mow twice a week, and water your lawn. It is also recommended to give your lawn a nourishing feed to make sure your lawn stays healthy.

August

This month you will need to repeat the lawn care instructions from June and July. However, if you start to notice dry patches make sure to avoid mowing over these patches as they will require a longer growth period.

September

As the autumn season approaches, you will need to slowly decrease the amount of times you mow your lawn. You will also need to be aware of how closely you cut your grass, at this time of the year you will only need to trim the ends of the grass in order to keep a reasonable length.

October

This month you will need to spike your lawn as well as keep any falling debris off. It is also recommended that you supply your lawn with an autumn feed to provide your lawn with essential nutrients.

November

Sweep over your lawn to remove any worm casts, you will need to use a stiff brush to do this.

December

It that time of year when you can put your feet up again, just make sure you keep fallen debris of your lawn.

Hopefully this quick and easy to follow guide will help you when it comes to maintaining your lawn. For more gardening tips, lawn mowers, and lawn mower spares visit World of Mowers in store or online today.

Spring Lawn Care

As the trees blossom and the flowers start to bloom you might start to think about the aesthetics of your garden. Preparing your garden over the spring months will be important for a fantastic looking garden in the summer. Here’s how you should approach spring lawn care.

Begin with Raking
Raking your lawn is one of the most important things you can do in the spring to get a healthy lawn. Make sure the ground is relatively dry and isn't soft and squishy. By raking, you pull out all the old dead grass and lift up some of the matted grass to keep fungus problems to a minimum. It does take a considerable amount of elbow grease, but it really is the best thing you can do for your lawn. A good raking in the spring effectively acts like a basic de-thatching that helps the thickness of the grass in the summer.

Feeding and Fertilizing
A good feed with a lawn fertiliser, not only makes the grass greener, but it makes it grow thicker and increases its strength, vigour and health. This will make the grass more robust and better equipped to compete with weeds, moss and weather-related stresses. In spring, the best results are achieved by using a granular feed and a lawn spreader that supplies a vast amount of nutrients over the entire garden.

Mowing
Mowing lawns outside of the summer might seem drudgery for some, but it is an important factor in the quest for a great looking garden in the future. Regular mowing insures healthy turf and mowing at the appropriate intervals will not only insure a beautiful lawn, but will provide sustenance for the roots.

Most grasses should be maintained at a height of about 2 inches during the spring and at 2½ -3 ½ inches during the hot summer months. The reason for the higher height during the summer insures that shade is provided for the underlying growth and higher growth enhances the retention of moisture in the soil, thereby reducing requirements for watering.

The most critical rule for determining the best time to mow is to insure that no more than 1/3 of the grass blades are cut at any one time. Cutting more than this length will damage the grass. First, it will deposit more thatch in the form of cuttings on your lawn than is healthy and second, the root system and small shoots of growth will be quickly exposed to the harsh summer sun which causes stress on the plants.

The 1/3 rule means that grass will likely require more frequent mowing in the spring when the grass has just been fertilized and is growing rapidly and less often during the hot summer months when growth is slower.

Start Preparing
If you neglect your lawn during spring, you could end up paying for it the rest of the year. Start preparing now and benefit from a beautiful looking garden in the future.
