Looking After Your Chainsaw

If you’re looking to get some use out of your chainsaw, maybe to chop some firewood or clear some unwanted branches, then you’ll want to make sure it’s up to scratch before doing so. Maintaining your chainsaw is always important, but especially after a long, unused, period it is essential to perform a few checks.

Firstly, you will need to check the oil level for the bar and chain. It is essential that the levels are optimum as without lubrication you could cause a lot of damage to your saw.  A majority of chainsaws are self-oiling so only the levels need to be topped up.

It is also important to keep the chain on your chainsaw sharp. This not only makes use of the chainsaw more efficient and effective but it also much safer for the user and will prevent kick-backs and imprecise cutting.

A metal file can easily be used to sharpen blades, and regular sharpening will make this less time-consuming in the long run. File at a right angle to the chainsaw rollers, ensuring that the chainsaw is secured in place.

You may also need to replace the air filter on your saw.  Usually, chainsaw air filters need to be replaced after every 10 hours of use, and will ensure that it is less prone to overheating and is more efficient. This is also the case with the fuel filter, which should be replaced every 20 hours, as the filter can become clogged and perform poorly.

If your chainsaw won’t start, it could be to do with the spark plug. Make sure that fuel is reaching the spark plug, and that the plug lead is making contact. Also, remember to clear any debris out of your chainsaw after every use.

Hopefully this quick and easy to follow guide will make sure that you're looking after your chainsaw properly. For more gardening tips, chainsaws, and chainsaw spares visit World of Mowers in store or online today.

Monthly Lawn Care Planner

When a new year starts the last thing you’re probably thinking about is lawn care. However, here at World of Mowers we have come up with a simple guide of what you need to do each month to look after your garden. Follow this guide from January to December and you will have a lush garden year after year.

January

January is the month where you can put your feet up because all you have to do is brush away any debris and keep off the grass, especially if it’s frozen.

February

Spring is slowly creeping back, so this month you will need to rake your grass thoroughly. Mid-way through the month it is recommended that you aerate your lawn to relieve compaction, improve drainage and allow more air into the roots.

March

The hard work kicks in this month as the growth rate for your grass should start to accelerate. You should be prepared to mow your lawn for this first time this year using a high quality mower. Make sure you only cut the top of your grass at this stage as close cutting your lawn will result in patches of your grass wilting/dying.

April

Mow your lawn at regular intervals when needed, your aiming to keep your grass at a healthy height without it becoming unmanageable. It is also the perfect time to repair any damage your lawn may have suffered over winter, you can do this by re-seeding any bare patches.

May

You will need to keep mowing your lawn at regular intervals. If you start to notice the growth of weeds then make sure you apply a suitable weed killer.

June

If you have a healthy lawn then you will need to mow it twice weekly. It is recommended that you regularly rake the grass to stimulate growth and eradicate any moss or debris. If temperatures are quite high and are frequently rising then you will need to water your lawn.

July

The same process applies to July. This month you need to make sure you regularly rake, mow twice a week, and water your lawn. It is also recommended to give your lawn a nourishing feed to make sure your lawn stays healthy.

August

This month you will need to repeat the lawn care instructions from June and July. However, if you start to notice dry patches make sure to avoid mowing over these patches as they will require a longer growth period.

September

As the autumn season approaches, you will need to slowly decrease the amount of times you mow your lawn. You will also need to be aware of how closely you cut your grass, at this time of the year you will only need to trim the ends of the grass in order to keep a reasonable length.

October

This month you will need to spike your lawn as well as keep any falling debris off. It is also recommended that you supply your lawn with an autumn feed to provide your lawn with essential nutrients.

November

Sweep over your lawn to remove any worm casts, you will need to use a stiff brush to do this.

December

It that time of year when you can put your feet up again, just make sure you keep fallen debris of your lawn.

Hopefully this quick and easy to follow guide will help you when it comes to maintaining your lawn. For more gardening tips, lawn mowers, and lawn mower spares visit World of Mowers in store or online today.

Want to be a Landscape Gardener?

A Landscape Gardener or architect is responsible for the outdoor space making it in an attractive way. To create the designs, the architects need to use computer software called CAD (computer-aided Design). It provides both creative and practical support to transform your garden.

In most cases, the landscape gardener begins with an initial client to look at the garden and discuss client needs and what they are looking for out of it. This is usually followed by a survey. On the 2nd meeting, this is to discuss generally about the budget and a more precise plan. The garden designer then starts to put into place the concept and ideas, with a working master plan with 3D perspectives. Once it is finished, the specifications are passed on to landscape contractors to price accurately.

Whenever starting a landscaping project, a consideration you should look at is what kind of tools do you need? If you are new to the job, finding the right tools is very important, so talk to one of the representative at World of Mowers who will help you to choose the right ones. Choosing the right tools for your projects makes gardening much easier. High quality ones will provide you with many years of good service when they are properly cared for.

Different basic tools:

Trowels: small hand tools with a scoop for moving dirt. Those are used to dig small holes.

Shovels: most people use them to dig out a flower or vegetable bed in preparation for planting.

Garden Forks: used to make deep cuts into soil, making it easier to turn over large chunks. It is a good tool for cultivating and working soil into manageable sizes

Pruning, trimming and cutting tools: Pruning shears are needed for trimming up shrubs, trees and many landscape plants. The best tools used for trimming are heavy-duty loppers.

How to Care for Your Lawn Mower

The appearance of your lawn is very important; it sets your home apart from every other on your street. If you are privileged enough to have a garden with a beautiful lawn, then it is well worth splashing out on a high quality lawn mower. A well kept mower makes the difference between a well kept lawn and an ill cut choppy one. Instead of having to buy a new lawn mower every couple of years, following these simple tips on how to care for your mower during the grass cutting season, may save you a bit of change for the holidays.

In order for your mower to last longer, you need to know these simple basic steps. During the summer season, mowing your lawn puts wear and tear on the blades. Take the time to place clean gas and oil in your lawn mower and clear the carburettor area of dirt and debris on a regular basis. These may seem like obvious maintenance ideas, however, they are rarely if ever thought about by most.

One of the most crucial parts of maintaining your mower is cleaning and sharpening the blades, which in an ideal world should be done every four to six weeks. Great care must be taken when sharpening your lawn mower blades and the first thing you must do is drain any gas and disconnect the spark plug to ensure the motor doesn’t start while you are removing the blades. Remove any built up debris from the blades using a scraper and sharpen using a file in the direction of the cutting edge.

At the start of the season make sure you service the spark plugs, oil, air and gas filters before you start running your mower for the grass cutting season. If your mower is well kept throughout the year, there is really not a lot of maintenance to be done for the winter. Before packing your lawn mower away at the end of the season, make sure you disconnect the spark plug and clean the body of the mower and blade area so it is ready to go for the next grass cutting season.

A beautiful lawn can be a great space to play with your children and entertain family and friends with a barbeque or garden party. A beautiful lawn can be used all year round and keeping it beautiful is well worth the effort of taking care of your lawn mower.
